The Simple Difference Between Soffit and Fascia

The two terms get mixed up because they're often replaced together and quoted as a single line item. The simplest way to remember:

  • Soffit = under (you stand under it and look up at it)

  • Fascia = face (you look at the face of it from across the yard)


If your home has any roof overhang, you have both. Walk to the corner of your house, look up at the underside of the overhang. The horizontal surface you see is the soffit. Now back up and look at the edge of the roof where the gutters are mounted. That vertical strip is the fascia.


Soffit panels are usually 12 to 24 inches wide and run the length of the eave. In Calgary, they're almost always perforated aluminum, which lets air pass through into the attic.


Fascia boards are usually 1x6 or 1x8 lumber, wrapped in pre-finished aluminum cladding to protect them from weather. The aluminum cladding is what most homeowners actually see; the wood is structural.

What Soffit Actually Does


Soffit has four jobs:


1. Ventilates the attic. Perforated soffit panels let outdoor air enter the attic, where it travels up through the rafter bays and exits through ridge or roof vents at the top. This balanced airflow controls attic temperature and moisture year-round.


2. Seals the underside of the overhang. Without soffit, the underside of your overhang would be exposed to wind-driven rain, snow, and pests. Soffit closes off that space cleanly.


3. Provides pest protection. Properly installed soffit blocks entry by birds, squirrels, mice, and wasps. Gaps in soffit are the most common entry point for pests into Calgary attics.


4. Finishes the roof edge visually. The aesthetic role matters for curb appeal. Soffit gives the roof edge a clean, painted-looking line instead of exposed rafter ends and roof deck underside.


The ventilation job is the most important and the most often misunderstood. Alberta Building Code requires 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 300 square feet of attic space, balanced between intake (soffit) and exhaust (ridge or roof vents). In a 1,500-square-foot attic, that's 5 square feet of total vent area. Soffit usually carries about half.


If your soffit is solid (non-perforated) along the entire eave, you have an intake-ventilation problem. Most Calgary homes built since the 1970s have perforated soffit, but older homes and additions sometimes don't.


What Fascia Actually Does


Fascia has three jobs:


1. Anchors the eavestrough system. Gutter hangers screw directly into the fascia board. If the fascia is rotting, hangers lose grip and the gutter sags. This is the most common reason eavestroughs start to pull away from the house.


2. Closes the top edge of the wall envelope. Fascia seals the gap between the roof deck and the top of the exterior wall. Without it, wind and water would drive into the wall cavity from above.


3. Supports the roof deck edge. The edge of the roof deck (the OSB or plywood under the shingles) rests on or near the top edge of the fascia. The fascia gives the deck a clean, supported termination.


The eavestrough anchoring job is what most homeowners notice first when fascia fails. Sagging gutters, separated seams, and gutters that pull away from the house all trace back to weakened fascia behind the aluminum cladding. The cladding hides the rot, which is why fascia damage often goes undetected until eavestroughs start failing.


Why They Work as a System

Soffit and fascia are paired by design. Each depends on the other.


Fascia anchors the eavestrough; eavestroughs keep water off the fascia. A failing fascia can't hold the eavestrough straight, which causes water to spill over and run down the fascia, which accelerates the failure.


Soffit ventilates the attic; attic ventilation reduces moisture damage to fascia and roof deck. Without intake ventilation through the soffit, attic moisture condenses on cold surfaces in winter, dripping back down onto roof deck and fascia.


Both seal the building envelope; gaps in one expose the other. A gap between soffit and fascia at a corner becomes a pest entry, a water entry, and a wind-uplift weak point.


When a roofer talks about replacing the "eave system" or "roof edge", they usually mean the combination of soffit, fascia, drip edge, eavestrough, and sometimes the first row of shingles. These elements are designed to work together; replacing one in isolation often creates compatibility problems with the others.

Three Calgary realities make soffit and fascia more consequential than in milder markets:


Ice damming. Calgary winters create the perfect ice-dam conditions. Warm attic air (often caused by under-vented soffit) melts snow at the ridge, water flows down to the cold eave, refreezes, and backs up under the shingles. The ice dam puts physical stress on the fascia (pulling eavestroughs forward) and the soffit (water seeping into the panel cavity).


Hail and wind storms. The 2020, 2021, and 2024 hail seasons damaged aluminum soffit panels and lifted fascia caps across thousands of Calgary homes. Wind alone, especially Chinook events that gust over 100 km/h, regularly tears fascia caps loose.


Freeze-thaw cycles. Calgary's 100+ annual freeze-thaw cycles widen any gap, crack, or unsealed seam. Painted wood fascia without aluminum cladding goes from sealed to weathered in 5 to 10 years.


The combination of these three factors means soffit and fascia in Calgary do more work, take more abuse, and need to be in better condition than in lower-stress climates.


Frequently Asked Questions


Can a home have one without the other?

Rarely. Some flat-roof or modernist designs use alternative edge details that eliminate traditional soffit (the roof edge meets the wall directly). Almost any home with a roof overhang has both. If you can stand under your overhang and look up at a horizontal surface, you have soffit. If you can see a vertical board where the eavestrough is mounted, you have fascia.

A frieze board is decorative trim at the top of the exterior wall where it meets the soffit. It's not the soffit or the fascia, but it sits next to both. Some Calgary homes have a frieze board; many don't.

Soffit runs along the eaves (the long horizontal edges of the roof), not the gables (the triangular ends). Gable ends have a different finish, usually a gable trim or rake board with a small return at the bottom. Some homes do have soffit returns at the gable corners.

It's a finish component, but it supports the eavestrough and the edge of the roof deck. Damaged fascia compromises both. If the fascia board behind the cladding is rotted, replacing the cladding without addressing the wood is a temporary fix.

Access. The same scaffolding or ladder setup that reaches the soffit reaches the fascia. The same crew that handles one handles the other. And the eavestrough has to come off either way, which is the largest single labour task in soffit or fascia work.
